Community Café & Kitchen

This began with a simple idea. What if a community café could be more than just somewhere to eat? What if it could be a place that sparked imagination, brought people together, created opportunities and gave people a chance to breathe?

Every corner has been created with purpose. Every sculpture tells part of our story, and at the heart of it all stands a tree, reminding us that everything we do is deeply rooted in the community we proudly serve.

At its heart is a place of support. Our approach is trauma-informed, with trained and experienced staff and volunteers bringing knowledge across Information, Advice and Guidance (IAG), counselling skills, domestic violence, mental health, safeguarding and housing.

We understand that life rarely sits neatly within one category. Housing can be connected to money, money to relationships, relationships to safety, safety to mental health, isolation or simply feeling unable to cope with everything at once. We don't believe a person should ever be considered "too complex" simply because different parts of their life overlap.

That's why we meet people where they are rather than asking them to fit into a tick box. We take time to listen, understand the whole picture and work alongside each person to identify what matters to them — helping them find the right information, service, support or next step.

And around all of this, everyday community life continues. People meet for lunch, friends catch up over coffee, conversations happen and connections are made. Every visit helps sustain a place that is there for the whole community — on ordinary days and on the days when someone needs a little more.

Tucked away behind Dragon's Crumb, our Secret Garden is currently being transformed into a welcoming outdoor community space where people can connect with nature, learn new skills and simply enjoy a little peace and quiet.

Designed to be accessible for everyone, the garden will include raised growing beds, accessible pathways, outdoor learning spaces and places to sit, relax and enjoy a coffee with friends. It will become a place where people of all ages can learn how to grow fruit, vegetables and herbs, discover how food makes its journey from garden to plate, and take part in creative arts and nature-based activities.

Whether you're planting your first seed, sharing gardening knowledge with others or simply enjoying the sounds of nature, we hope the Secret Garden will become another place where friendships grow, confidence blossoms and everybody finds a little bit of magic.

The IRIS Project is a charity shop with a bigger purpose. Every purchase, donation and act of support helps us provide practical resources for people rebuilding their lives after crisis. From affordable clothing and school uniforms to our Home Safe and Fresh Start initiatives, the IRIS Project transforms community generosity into practical support for those who need it most.
