Learning through community
Learning Through Community
We believe some of the most valuable learning happens when people step outside of their usual environment and spend time alongside one another. Through our partnerships, placements, volunteering and Skills Academy, we bring together young people, students, professionals, businesses and members of our community to share knowledge, experience and understanding. These opportunities are not one-sided. Everyone brings something, everyone contributes, and everyone has the opportunity to learn.
The Guardians Grow Skills Academy
The Skills Academy grew from young people who wanted the opportunity to be part of our work, and it continues to be shaped by them. Across our different community settings, young people can gain meaningful workplace experience while developing practical skills, confidence and independence in an environment where they are valued for who they are.
For many, particularly those who are neurodivergent, having somewhere they feel safe enough to learn, make mistakes, contribute and belong can make an enormous difference. The Academy combines real experience with individual support, mentoring and a Skills Passport that recognises the journey each young person makes.
Warwick Medical School
Our relationship with Warwick Medical School gives medical students an opportunity to spend time within our community and learn directly from the people who use our services. By listening to people’s experiences of health, mental health, disadvantage and accessing services, students are able to explore health inequalities beyond textbooks and clinical settings.
It is an opportunity to understand the person behind the patient, the wider circumstances that can affect health and wellbeing, and the importance of listening to communities when we think about reducing inequalities in healthcare.
Occupational Therapy Student Placements
Through our developing relationship with the Adult Neurodevelopment Service at Coventry and Warwickshire Partnership NHS Trust, trainee occupational therapists will undertake eight-week placements within our community settings. These placements provide opportunities to work alongside people using our services, including neurodivergent adults, and to develop and deliver purposeful activities in response to the people they meet.
Whether through cooking, creativity, mindfulness, conversation or other meaningful activity, students can learn about engagement, participation and individual need in a real community environment, while bringing their own developing knowledge and ideas into our services.
Coventry Building Society Community Partnership
Our community partnership with Coventry Building Society brings together the Nuneaton and Hinckley branches in support of our work. Alongside fundraising for the charity, colleagues are able to use their volunteering hours within our projects and services, bringing a wide range of skills and experience with them.
This creates opportunities to do much more than simply lend an extra pair of hands. From practical activities to sharing knowledge around areas such as budgeting and financial skills, the partnership allows people from the business community to use their time and expertise in ways that can have a direct and meaningful impact within their local community.
Volunteering
Volunteers have always been an important part of our charity and the community around it. Our volunteering programme offers a wide range of opportunities for people to become actively involved in supporting others, whether through our cafés, shops, creative activities, community projects or wider services.
People come to volunteering for many different reasons and bring different experiences, abilities and strengths with them. In return, volunteering can provide experience, skills, connection and confidence — but importantly, it also gives people the opportunity to take an active role in the community they are part of.
Working Together
If you’re an organisation, business, public service or community group and you see an opportunity for us to work together, we’d love to hear from you. We believe the strongest communities are built when people share their knowledge, resources and ideas, and we’re always open to conversations about partnerships that can create meaningful opportunities for the people we support.
Be the Difference.
